The Cannabis Plant

Learning about the components of the plant and their effects

The term cannabis refers to a group of three plants i.e. cannabis Indica, cannabis Sativa, and cannabis Ruderalis. These plants produce the most common drug in the world which is also called weed, pot, or marijuana.

Cannabis is getting more and more popular for its calming and relaxing effects and is also medically prescribed to help address several medical conditions. However, it is a controlled substance in the United States and the possession of illegal cannabis is prohibited.

Components of Cannabis:

Cannabis contains more than 700 natural components, terpenoids, flavonoids of which over a hundred are classified as cannabinoids. Some cannabinoids are psychoactive and can affect your mood and mind, while others and non-psychoactive. Though the role and effects of each component are yet to be fully understood, still experts have a pretty good understanding of the two most popular cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant i.e. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

  • CBD is a non-euphoric cannabinoid that does not get you “high” nor does it produce intoxicating effects. It is commonly used to address pain, inflammation, and also may help ease nausea, anxiety, seizures, and migraine.

  • THC, on the other hand, is the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It is responsible for producing a “high” sensation that is commonly associated with cannabis.

There are many cannabis products that only contain CBD and have no THC. There are some strains that include both cannabinoids but much more of one than the other. Hemp is enriched with CBD and contains almost no THC while Marijuana contains higher THC content.

Effects of CBD and THC

CBD has shown anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunosuppressive, and anti-cancer, and anxiety-relieving effects.

THC binds with the CB1 receptors in our brain and produces euphoric effects. Though CBD has a low affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors as it binds weakly and needs THC to bind to the receptors, still it can help reduce the undesired euphoria or psychoactive effects of THC.

CBD is used to help manage:

  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Seizures
  • Chronic pain
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Psychosis

While THC is used to help with certain medical conditions:

  • Glaucoma
  • Muscle spasm
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety

However, THC and CBD have many of the same health and medical benefits and can provide relief from several conditions. People prefer the use of CBD due to its non-intoxicating effects and safe use. There is a wide range of CBD products including CBD oil, tinctures, topicals, softgels, balms, and gummies, that can serve you for different health and medical purposes.
